# Surbova Beach

> Surbova is a small 80-metre pebble cove south of Stara Baška, reachable by foot via a coastal trail or by boat from Stara Baška harbour. Crystal water, no facilities, and a quiet wild-cove feel typical of the south-western coast — among the smallest of the Stara Baška-area beaches but consistently one of the quietest.

## Beschreibung

Surbova sits in a small cove on Krk's south-western coast, in the cluster of small bays between Stara Baška village and the boat-only Oprna further south. The cove is reachable by foot via a coastal trail from the village edge (about 25 minutes' walk) or by boat from Stara Baška harbour (taxi-boat in summer; 5–10 minutes' ride).

The shoreline is fine pebble — about 80 metres long and 10 metres wide at average depth — set in a small protected cove with limestone cliffs rising on both sides. The pebble continues as the seabed, gradually deepening, with very clear water — visibility on calm mornings commonly reaches 8–9 metres. The bay opens south-west, giving full afternoon and evening sun.

No facilities exist on the beach. No toilets, no shower, no kiosk, no rental loungers. Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, snorkel gear, and a bag for your rubbish.

The practical attraction versus the boat-only south-coast coves further south is the dual access — visitors can choose foot or boat depending on circumstances. The 25-minute walk from Stara Baška is manageable for fit hikers but not for casual visitors; the taxi-boat option (€10–15 per person) makes the cove accessible to a broader range of visitors.

The small size means even modest crowds can feel busy — Surbova works best with 5–15 visitors, and starts to feel dense above 25. Local Stara Baška residents form most of the regular visitor base; international tourist density is low because the cove isn't actively promoted.

Surbova is the right beach for visitors based in Stara Baška village who want a daily quieter swim alternative to busier Škrila campsite beach (a 10-minute drive away), hikers willing to walk 25 minutes each way for a small wild-cove experience, and visitors arriving by short taxi-boat from Stara Baška. It's not the right beach for visitors with mobility limitations, families with very young children given the walking access, or anyone expecting amenities.

Off-season visits in May and October are particularly rewarding — the small cove is essentially solo most days, water is still warm enough for comfortable swimming through early autumn, and the surrounding scrub catches the warm light of the eastern Adriatic shoulder season.

Off-season character at Surbova is shaped by the small population of Stara Baška village's year-round fishermen, several of whom maintain small boats anchored in the cove through autumn for occasional fishing trips. Visitors during the shoulder seasons (May or October) sometimes encounter these working boats early in the morning and can buy fresh catch directly if the timing aligns.

## Häufig gestellte Fragen

### How do I get to Surbova?

Two options: 25-minute coastal walk from Stara Baška village edge along an unmarked but well-worn trail, or 5–10 minute taxi-boat from Stara Baška harbour (€10–15 per person in summer).

### Is Surbova as quiet as the boat-only south coast coves?

Yes, mostly — the dual access actually keeps the cove quieter than you'd expect. The walk filters out casual visitors, the taxi-boat fee filters out budget-strict travellers, and the small size means it never gets resort-busy. Typical peak summer day: 10–20 visitors at midday.

### Are there any facilities at Surbova?

None. No toilets, showers, kiosks, or rental loungers. Bring everything for the day including a rubbish bag. The lack of commercial development is what keeps the cove wild.

### Is the trail suitable for children?

Older children comfortable on a 25-minute scrub trail with rocky sections, yes. Not appropriate for very young children, visitors with mobility limitations, or anyone uncomfortable on uneven terrain.

### When is the best time to visit Surbova?

Late May to early June for warming water and minimal crowds; or late September through early October for warm-enough water and essentially solo conditions. Mid-July to mid-August is the busiest with 15–25 visitors at midday but still meaningfully quieter than Stara Baška Center or Škrila campsite beach.
