What to Do on Krk Island When It Rains

Wine cellars, craft workshops and unhurried lunches that carry on whatever the sky is doing — and which part of Krk to find them in.

Rain on Krk is usually brief and heavy rather than a lost day, but when it does settle in the island has more indoor answers than its reputation suggests.

Start with the sights, because they are the ones people miss. Biserujka Cave sits under the hills above Rudine and keeps the same temperature whatever the weather is doing. Baška has both an aquarium and the museum built around the Bašćanska ploča, the Glagolitic tablet found at Jurandvor. Krk Town has its cathedral, Vrbnik has Klančić, and Dobrinj has an ethnographic collection.

Then the cellars. Vrbnik's Žlahtina estates pour in cool stone rooms that are frankly better in bad weather than good, and Malinska and Krk Town have their own.

Then the workshops, which are the least obvious and often the best: wool felting, ceramics, olive-wood carving, pastry, and šurlice rolled by hand. Krk Town holds most of them.

And then lunch, which on this island is never a consolation prize.
