# Blacksmithing and Metalwork on Krk

> The traditional Krk blacksmith (kovač) was an essential village trade producing and repairing the iron and steel hardware that supported the agricultural-fishing-craft economy — agricultural tools (plowshares, hoes, scythes, sickles), fishing equipment (hooks, anchors, hardware), boatbuilding hardware (nails, fittings, fastenings), household ironwork (cooking equipment, hinges, door fittings, locks), horseshoes and harness fittings, and miscellaneous repairs. Each major Krk village historically had at least one working smith, with larger villages supporting multiple. The trade declined dramatically through the 20th century with industrial production displacing village smithwork; very few traditional smiths remain on Krk today.
