# Charcoal Making and Lime Burning

> Charcoal making (pougljarstvo) and lime burning (vapnenarstvo) were two related traditional trades supplying essential materials for other Krk industries — charcoal for blacksmithing forges and household cooking, and burnt lime for mortar and plaster used in construction. Both trades involved controlled-burning processes conducted in specific outdoor or semi-outdoor installations (charcoal piles called milere or kopa, and lime kilns called vapnenice or vapnare), required substantial skill and dangerous working conditions, and provided essential inputs for the broader traditional economy. Both trades are now effectively extinct on Krk, displaced by industrial production of equivalent materials, but their heritage traces remain in specific landscape features and the historical economic record.
