# Croatian War of Independence and Krk

> The Croatian War of Independence (Domovinski rat, 1991–1995) was Croatia's struggle for independence from Yugoslavia, fought primarily on Croatian mainland territory. Krk experienced no direct military action on its territory, but the war nevertheless transformed the island substantially — tourism collapsed during the war years with severe economic impact; Krk hosted substantial refugee populations from war-affected mainland areas; many young Krk men served in Croatian military forces, with some casualties; the post-war period brought reconstruction, transition, and eventual recovery; and the long-term political-cultural impact established the post-Yugoslav Croatian framework within which contemporary Krk operates. Memorial sites and continuing commemoration honor those who served and were lost.
