# Maritime Trades of Krk — Sailmakers, Ropemakers, Riggers

> Beyond the master shipwright (kalafat), traditional Krk maritime construction depended on a constellation of specialist trades: sailmakers (jedrari) who cut and sewed lateen and other sails from heavy hand-woven canvas; ropemakers (užari) who twisted hemp into running and standing rigging on long ropewalks; riggers who fitted out completed hulls with mast, spars, lines, and sails; ironworkers who forged anchors, fastenings, and metal fittings; and various other specialists. These trades, never large in absolute numbers but essential to maritime life, declined alongside the wooden boatbuilding tradition itself and persist today only in residual form among heritage-craft practitioners.
