# Medieval Town Gates of Krk

> Medieval Krk villages with defensive walls had gates — controlled openings in the wall circuits that managed access in and out of the fortified core. The gates ranged from substantial fortified entries with towers, machicolations, and multiple defensive elements (Krk town's sea gate and land gate) to smaller pedestrian-oriented village entries. While many gates have been modified or partially absorbed into later building, surviving examples preserve key features of medieval defensive architecture and continue to channel pedestrian access in the same locations they did 700 years ago.
