# Omišalj Old Town and Castle

> Omišalj's old town occupies a prominent hilltop site at the northwestern tip of Krk, with a medieval core dominated by the remains of a Frankopan castle, a parish church with significant heritage value, and a fabric of stone vernacular houses arranged around small piazzas. The site was strategically important throughout antiquity and the medieval period, controlling the approach to Krk from the mainland (long before the bridge) and providing defensive overwatch over the Velika vrata channel. The adjacent Roman site of Fulfinum, the medieval Frankopan presence, and the modern village together represent some 2,000 years of continuous settlement at one of Krk's key strategic locations.
