# Romanesque Churches of Krk

> Krk preserves an exceptional density of Romanesque churches for an island of its size — perhaps 15–25 buildings of the 11th–13th centuries with substantial Romanesque fabric still legible, ranging from the substantial cathedral and parish churches of major villages down to modest single-cell rural chapels scattered across the agricultural landscape. The Krk Romanesque is broadly continuous with the eastern Adriatic and broader Mediterranean traditions of the period but with local materials (Krk limestone), construction practices, and decorative motifs that give the island's churches a recognizable family character. Together they constitute one of the most concentrated assemblages of Romanesque ecclesiastical architecture on the Croatian Adriatic.
