> Stonemasonry — the craft of cutting, shaping, fitting, and decorating stone for construction and ornamental purposes — has been one of Krk's most fundamental and continuously practiced trades from Roman antiquity through the present. Krk's local limestone provided abundant material; centuries of architectural construction (cathedrals, churches, castles, town walls, vernacular houses, drystone field walls) provided continuous demand; and the resulting tradition produced multiple generations of skilled klesari (stonemasons) whose work shapes virtually every aspect of the island's built heritage. The craft persists today in heritage-restoration work, new construction in heritage-protected zones, and decorative stonework, though at much-reduced scale compared to historical peaks.
