# Traditional Boat Builders of Krk

> Traditional Krk boat builders — known by the Italo-Slavic term kalafat (from Italian calafato) for the master shipwright, with a hierarchy of apprentices and specialist sub-trades — formed a small but essential professional community across centuries of island life. Centered at Punat but with practitioners in Vrbnik, Šilo, Baška, and other coastal villages, the kalafati built and maintained the kaići, gajetas, and leuti that connected Krk to the wider Adriatic. Their craft, transmitted by apprenticeship over decades, persists today only in greatly reduced form, with perhaps a dozen master craftsmen remaining on Krk and a handful of dedicated apprentices learning techniques that took centuries to perfect.
