# Traditional Krk Fishing Methods

> Traditional Krk fishing combined a rich repertoire of techniques refined over centuries: fish traps (vrše) for inshore species, longlines (parangali) for offshore predators, gillnets (mreže) of varying mesh sizes for different species, hand-lines for jigging, spear-fishing with osti (the multi-pronged trident) for shallow-water catch, and night fishing with light (svjećarica) to attract sardines and other surface schoolers. Each method had its season, its target species, its lunar timing, and its village specialist. While modern licensed commercial fishing has standardized, many of these techniques persist among Krk's small-scale and recreational fishermen and form the basis of the food culture in island konobas.
