Krk in October

Harvest month: the olive days begin in Punat, and the mountain-bike marathon rolls out of Baška.

October is harvest, and the outdoor season's last word. Punat's Olive Days -- Croatia's first, running since 1996 -- bring oil tastings, olive dishes in the restaurants, exhibitions, children's workshops and walks through the groves as the picking starts. Malinska answers with Olive Touch on every Saturday of the month: a harvest morning in the Utla groves, the largest historic mill in Dubašnica, and a tasting at the DUBoak centre. On the second weekend Baška runs its Outdoor Festival -- the Krk 'n' Roll mountain-bike marathon and the Krk 'n' Trail run on the Saturday, a zipline all three days, climbing for beginners, a guided hike along the eastern ridge.

The sea is still warm enough to swim in and the island is emptying out. For walkers and cyclists it is the best month there is.
