# Oprna

> Oprna is one of Krk's most-photographed hidden coves — a 200-metre crescent of pale pebbles tucked beneath a steep coastal cliff on the south-western tip of the island. Reached only on foot via a 15-minute scramble down from the road above, it rewards the effort with crystal-clear water and almost no built infrastructure.

## Opis

Oprna sits in a small bay below the road that winds along the south-western coast of Krk, between Stara Baška and the open sea. The descent from the parking strip above is short but unforgiving — a narrow dirt path with loose stones, no railings, and a 60-metre vertical drop spread over roughly 250 metres of trail. Decent shoes are essential; flip-flops are a recipe for a sprained ankle.

Once you're down, the beach itself is small but extraordinary. The pebbles are smooth and pale, the seabed is the same all the way out, and visibility in the water is typically 8–10 metres on a calm day. The bay opens south-west, so afternoon sun lasts until roughly 6 PM in summer; morning visitors get partial shade from the cliff itself. The water reaches its warmest (24–25°C) by late July and stays comfortable into mid-September.

There are no facilities. No showers, no toilets, no bar, no rental loungers. Bring water (at least a litre per person), snacks, sunscreen, and pack out everything you bring in — the bay's lack of amenities is exactly what keeps it from getting overrun. Snorkelling is excellent: the rocky edges of the cove host small fish, hermit crabs, sea urchins, and the occasional octopus tucked into a crevice. Visibility on calm mornings reaches 10 metres or more.

Oprna is one of three or four similar coves along this stretch of south-western coast, so if it's full (which is rare even in August), you can walk along the shoreline path to find a quieter neighbour. The road above winds past several other unmarked pull-offs that lead down to similarly small bays. Locals use these interchangeably; visitors usually stop at the first one they find.

The coast here was largely uninhabited historically because of the lack of fresh water and the difficulty of access. The few remaining stone houses on the road above are summer homes used by Stara Baška families. The wider area is part of the protected coastal landscape of southern Krk; the road sees little traffic outside high summer, and the ridge behind hosts a handful of marked hiking trails for walkers willing to combine a long day's exploring with a swim.

Oprna is best for fit visitors looking for the most photogenic swim on the island and willing to trade comfort for solitude. Not suitable for very young children, anyone with mobility issues, or for a long beach day if you forget to bring water.

## Kako doći

- Pješice

From Baška, drive west on the road towards Stara Baška (about 8 km, 15 minutes). Pass through Stara Baška and continue south on the coastal road for another 3 km. The trailhead is unmarked — look for a few cars parked on a wide gravel shoulder on the seaward side. The path down is on the same side, just past the parking strip. Allow 12–18 minutes to reach the beach.

From Krk Town, allow 35 minutes by car. There is no public bus service to this stretch of road; a taxi-boat from Stara Baška in summer is an alternative for the descent-averse.

## Savjeti za posjet

- Wear proper shoes for the descent — flip-flops slip on the loose stones.
- Pack out all rubbish; there are no bins, and litter destroys the cove's character.
- Mornings have partial shade from the cliff; afternoons are exposed.
- Bring more water than you think you need — there's nowhere to refill.
- The trail is much harder going up than coming down. Allow 25 minutes to climb back out.

## Često postavljana pitanja

### How hard is the hike down to Oprna?

The trail descends about 60 metres over 250 metres of loose-stone path, with no railings. It's manageable for fit adults in proper shoes (10–15 minutes down, 20–25 up). Not suitable for young children, strollers, or anyone with mobility issues.

### Can I get to Oprna by boat?

Yes — taxi boats from Stara Baška run in summer (June–September) and many private boats anchor in the bay. The cove is on most south-coast snorkelling tour itineraries.

### Are there any facilities at Oprna?

No. There are no showers, toilets, food, drinks, or rental loungers. Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and a bag for your rubbish.

### Is Oprna safe for swimming?

Yes for confident swimmers — the seabed is smooth pebble, drops gradually to about 2 metres in the bay, and there are no currents in normal conditions. Not lifeguarded; supervise children closely.

### What's the best time of day to visit Oprna?

Late morning (10:00–13:00) gives you partial cliff shade and the warmest sea. Sunset visits can be magical but the climb back up in fading light is harder; carry a torch if you stay late.
