# Soline (Čižići mud beach)

> Soline Bay near the village of Čižići is Krk's therapeutic mud beach — a wide tidal flat where summer visitors traditionally cover themselves in dark mineral peloid mud, dry in the sun, then rinse off in the warm shallow sea. It's the strangest and most folkloric beach experience on the island.

## Opis

Soline is a shallow, semi-enclosed bay on the north-east coast of Krk, between Klimno and Čižići. At low tide, large mud flats are exposed; at high tide they're covered by water perhaps a metre deep. The mud itself — locally called 'fango' or 'peloid' — has been used for generations to treat skin conditions, joint pain, and rheumatic complaints. The tradition is folk medicine, not formal therapy, but it draws visitors from across Croatia and central Europe every summer.

The beach 'experience' is a sequence: walk out a short distance from shore, scoop up the dark grey-brown mud from the bottom, smear it over arms, legs, and torso, then walk back to shore and dry in the sun for 20–30 minutes. The dried mud cracks slightly as it dries — that's the signal it's ready to rinse off. Some visitors prefer to dry in stages: a thinner first coat, rinse, then a thicker second coat. The dried mud is then rinsed off in the sea or under the freshwater showers at the back of the beach. Most visitors do this once or twice a day for the full week or two of their stay.

The shore itself is a strip of small pebble and grey sand. The seabed is muddy for the first 10–20 metres, transitioning to firmer sand further out. Water temperature in this shallow bay can reach 28–30°C in late July — among the warmest on the entire Adriatic coast. The downside is that the same shallow geometry means the bay can smell strongly of marine vegetation in still weather. A light easterly breeze freshens the bay quickly; calm hot afternoons are the worst for the smell.

The mud's mineral composition has been studied informally by local researchers and is reported to be rich in silicates, organic plant matter, and trace minerals from the surrounding karst geology. The therapeutic claims are not endorsed by Croatian state medicine but are widely accepted in folk tradition; some Croatian dermatologists do recommend Soline visits informally for chronic skin conditions.

Facilities are basic: outdoor showers, public toilets, and a few seasonal kiosks selling water, ice cream, and grilled fish. Free parking lots line the road above the beach. The atmosphere is unmistakably Croatian-domestic — far more local than international. Most visitors are repeat customers from Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, and Germany who book the same Čižići apartment for one to three weeks every summer specifically for the mud routine. Conversation around the showers is a polyglot mix.

The nearby village of Čižići has a small grocery, a butcher, and three or four konobas serving simple grilled fish and meat. For more substantial dining or supplies, drive 15 minutes to Krk Town.

## Savjeti za posjet

- The mud is genuinely staining — don't wear good swimwear.
- Bring an old towel for the post-mud sit-down.
- The shallow bay is wonderfully warm but can smell of marine vegetation in still weather; light wind helps.
- Best mud-application happens at low tide when the flats are most accessible.
- Rinse off thoroughly under the freshwater showers — dried sea-mud on the way home is unpleasant.

## Često postavljana pitanja

### Does the mud at Soline really help with skin or joint problems?

The peloid mud is a natural mix of fine mineral sediment and decomposed marine organic matter. It's used in folk medicine for dermatological and rheumatic complaints. Formal medical evidence is limited; many visitors swear by it after repeated weekly applications.

### Will the mud stain my swimwear?

Yes, the mud often leaves brownish-grey stains that don't fully wash out. Wear an old swimsuit you don't mind discolouring.

### Is the water at Soline clean?

The bay is shallow and warm (often 28°C+ in late July), so the water can be murky and smell of marine vegetation in still conditions. It is not Blue Flag rated. Most visitors come for the mud experience, not for clear-water swimming.

### Are there toilets and showers?

Yes — public toilets and outdoor freshwater showers are along the beach. Use the showers thoroughly to rinse off mud before changing.

### Can I take some mud home?

Locally, yes — many visitors fill a bucket. There's no commercial restriction. Don't try to bring it through airport security: it's classified as a liquid/paste.
