# Škrila Beach (Camp)

> Škrila is the longest beach in the Stara Baška area — a 420-metre pebble strip in front of the Camping Škrila resort, with full facilities you don't usually find on the south-western coast. Cleared trails through the surrounding maquis, a pine-shaded promenade, and unusually clear water make it the practical pick if you want full amenities without leaving the wild south coast.

## Descrizione

Škrila Beach sits in the broad bay below Camping Škrila resort, halfway between Stara Baška village and the wilder south-western coves. The beach is fine pebble — about 420 metres long and 10–12 metres wide at average depth — with a uniform pebble seabed and gradual entry. The bay opens west, getting full afternoon and evening sun, with the surrounding pine-clad hillside providing intermittent shade across the back of the beach through midday.

The water clarity is among the best on Krk's south-western coast — visibility commonly 8–10 metres on calm days. This stretch of coast faces directly onto the open Adriatic without the protection of an enclosed bay, which means the water circulates strongly and stays exceptionally clear, but it also means the surface chops up faster when southerly winds pick up. Check the wind forecast (the maestral typically rises after midday in summer) and time your swim accordingly.

Facilities are unusually complete for this stretch of coast, thanks to the campsite behind. Camping Škrila operates the beach bars, the lounger rentals, and the snack kiosks, and they're open to all visitors regardless of camping status. Showers, toilets, and changing rooms are at three locations along the beach. Lounger rental runs €10–15 per day for two loungers and an umbrella. Lifeguards are not formally posted but the campsite staff keep an eye on the water in normal hours.

The surrounding landscape is the wild south-western coast of Krk: low Mediterranean maquis (juniper, sage, immortelle), small olive groves, and the network of trails that connect Stara Baška to the more remote coves further south. The campsite has cleared and signed several short hiking loops behind the beach, including one that climbs to a viewpoint over Oprna Cove (Tier-1) about 25 minutes' walk away. After a morning swim at Škrila, walking out to one of the smaller neighbouring coves makes for a good afternoon.

Škrila is the right beach for travellers who want the wild south-coast feel of Stara Baška but with reliable amenities, families staying at the campsite, and anyone exploring the coastal trails who needs a base with showers and food. It's not the right beach if you want resort-style polish — for that, head to Vela Plaža in Baška proper.

The Camping Škrila resort behind the beach is one of the larger campsites on the island (around 300 pitches plus a handful of mobile homes), open from late April to early October. The campsite has its own small grocery shop, a laundry, a children's playground, and a basic medical office in season. Multi-day visitors typically combine Škrila as their morning beach with afternoons exploring the southern coast: marked trails lead from the campsite to the Oprna Cove viewpoint, the smaller bays towards Krk Town, and the historic chapel of Sv. Andrija on the ridge above Stara Baška village.

## Domande frequenti

### Do I need to be staying at Camping Škrila to use the beach?

No — the beach is fully public. The campsite operates the beach bars and lounger rentals but they're open to all visitors regardless of camping status. Parking in the campsite's lot is paid for non-guests.

### Is Škrila safe for swimming?

Yes for swimmers in normal conditions — gradual pebble entry, uniform seabed, clear water. The bay opens onto the open Adriatic so the surface can chop up when southerly winds (especially the afternoon maestral) pick up; check the forecast and time swims for the morning calm.

### Is parking available at Škrila?

Yes — paid parking in the campsite's lot is about 50 metres from the beach. Pricing is around €3-4/hour in peak season for non-guests, with discounted multi-day rates. The lot fills by mid-morning in peak summer.

### Are dogs allowed at Škrila?

Camping Škrila accepts dogs as guests but the beach itself is not designated dog-friendly. The closest formal dog beaches are Kijac (Njivice) and Redagara (Krk Town); both are over 30 km away.

### What can I combine with a Škrila beach visit?

The marked hiking trails behind the campsite lead to several smaller coves and viewpoints. The most popular short walk is to a viewpoint over Oprna Cove (about 25 minutes); for the cove itself, drive 5 minutes south and descend the trail. A half-day combining Škrila + Oprna gives you both the amenity comfort and a wild-cove swim.
