What to Do on Krk Island in Autumn
Grape must, olive pressing and fig preserves — autumn is the island's harvest, and the largest seasonal food calendar it has.
Autumn is the island's most productive season and its least advertised. September still swims, October is the grape and olive harvest, and by November the coast is quiet and the kitchens are busy.
The harvest is the reason to come. Žlahtina is picked in Vrbnik in September and October, and the pressing turns into things that exist nowhere else on the calendar: pekmez od grožđa, the grape syrup boiled down from must, and Krk muštarda, the must spread that goes with cheese. Olives follow in late October — the year's oil is new and green and worth buying then.
Then the preserving. Ajvar and pickled vegetables get made in quantity, figs turn into jam and tarts, and the peppers get stuffed. This is the largest seasonal recipe set on the island by a distance.
September is the best-value month on Krk: sea still warm, most things still open, and the August prices gone.
