Croatia vs Portugal: a warm calm sea against a cold wild one

Two small countries of similar size as destinations. Portugal has the Atlantic, sand, surf, a longer season and Lisbon and Porto; Croatia has a tideless, swimmable, island-strewn sea you can drive to. Sourced numbers and a verdict.

Choose Croatia for a warm, calm, tideless sea full of islands, reachable by car, and sailing you can do with children. Choose Portugal for the Atlantic -- surf, sand, wild coast -- a longer season, and Lisbon and Porto.

Croatia and Portugal are the two small countries of Europe's south that punch far above their weight as destinations, and the Eurostat numbers make them near-twins: 93 643 696 nights in tourist accommodation for Croatia in 2024 and 88 073 583 for Portugal, from 20 239 316 and 32 335 412 arrivals, for populations of 3 874 350 and 10 749 635. Croatia has 1 177 999 bed-places to Portugal's 721 293. Same scale; different seas. That is the whole comparison, and it decides most people's choice in one row.

The sea

The Adriatic is warm in summer, calm, tideless and clear, with islands in sight from almost every beach. The Atlantic off Portugal is cold even in August on most of the coast, with surf and real tides and long sandy beaches; the Algarve's south-facing coast is the milder exception. If you want to swim -- to float for an hour, to put small children in the water, to snorkel off a rock -- Croatia wins outright. If you want to surf, or to walk a wild ocean beach with the wind in your face, Portugal has some of the best coast in Europe and Croatia has none of it.

Where Portugal wins

Surf and sand, as above. The season: the Algarve is mild through the winter and Madeira is a year-round island, where Croatia's coast is a May-to-October place. The cities: Lisbon and Porto are two of Europe's great city breaks, and Croatia's Split and Dubrovnik, lovely as they are, are half the size. And the table: port, Vinho Verde, the Douro, and a seafood kitchen the world has lately discovered. Croatia's island wines and its EU-protected prosciutto and olive oil are very good and much less known.

Where Croatia wins

The drive. From Vienna, Munich, Milan or Budapest the Croatian coast is a day in the car; Portugal is a flight, and a long one from the east of Europe. Krk, the first island on the road, is joined to the mainland by a bridge and has Rijeka Airport on it.

The islands. Croatia has over a thousand, a short ferry apart, and you can see the northern archipelago -- Krk, Rab, Cres, Lošinj -- in a week. Portugal's islands, Madeira and the Azores, are superb and each a flight from the mainland.

Sailing. The sheltered Adriatic archipelago is the best water in the Mediterranean for a family charter; the open Atlantic is serious sailing, not holiday sailing.

What this page will not say

That Croatia is cheaper, without a qualification. Its household prices are lower than Portugal's (78,4 against 86,6 per cent of the EU average in Eurostat's 2025 figures), but its restaurants and accommodation are clearly dearer (89,6 against 73,6). Nor will it claim a longer season, because Portugal's is longer.

And within Croatia, why Krk

Because it is the island you reach first, and the one you can reach without a boat. Krk is joined to the mainland by a road bridge, Rijeka Airport sits on the island at Omišalj, and the motorway from Zagreb puts you on it in about ninety minutes. It recorded 5 040 825 overnight stays in 2025 from 940 240 arrivals across seven municipalities -- a walled capital, a wine town on a cliff, a fishing village at the end of a valley, family resorts on the west coast -- with 57 711 permanent beds, the largest stock of any Croatian island. Its calendar runs from the carnival in late January to Advent, twenty-six recurring events across eleven months, all on this site. It is the Croatia that Croatians, Austrians, Germans and Slovenes drive to every year, and it is a good place to find out whether the country is for you.

The verdict

Choose Croatia for a warm, calm sea full of islands that you can drive to, and for sailing you can do with children. Choose Portugal for the Atlantic -- surf, sand and wild coast -- for a season that runs through winter, and for Lisbon and Porto. Two small countries, the same size as destinations, with opposite seas.
