Cres is the island you can see from Krk's west coast and reach in twenty-five minutes, and it is the opposite kind of place. Krk is the lived-in island of Kvarner: seven towns, a bridge, an airport, a calendar. Cres is the wild one, long and thin and mostly empty, with a freshwater lake in the middle and griffon vultures on its cliffs. This page sets the sourced numbers side by side and says who should choose which -- and, unusually for this series, the emptiness that gives Krk most of its numbers is the reason to choose Cres.

Getting there

Krk you drive onto over the bridge, or fly into at Omišalj. Cres is a ferry: Jadrolinija's crossing from Valbiska on Krk to Merag takes 25 minutes according to its route page, the shortest ferry anywhere in this comparison series, and there is a crossing from Brestova in Istria on the other side. After Merag comes the drive, and Cres is a long island: Cres town is half an hour, the south end and the road on to Lošinj well over an hour. Krk takes the row on access, but only just, and the drive down Cres is one of the good ones.

The numbers that make Cres what it is

Krk recorded 5,040,825 overnight stays in 2025; Cres recorded 1,194,326. Arrivals were 940,240 against 164,183. Four times the nights on Krk, and Krk has 57,711 permanent beds to Cres's 13,782. In every other article in this series those rows read as scale. Here they read as the whole point. Cres is empty because it has always been empty, and the people who love it would not have it otherwise.

Cres's guests also stay the longest of any island in the statistics office's table: 7.3 nights per arrival in 2025 to Krk's 5.4. Nobody goes to Cres for a weekend. You take a house in Valun or a pitch in the campsite north of Cres town, and you stay.

The weather is the same, apart from the rain

For August 2025 the sea-surface maximum at Cres town averaged 24.1 °C against 23.6 °C at Krk town, and the afternoons 28.6 °C to 29.6 °C. It is the same sea and the same air. Cres town did have less rain that month -- 79.5 mm to Krk town's 142.2 mm -- which fits the pattern that the western, seaward sides of the Kvarner islands catch fewer of the summer storms. One month of one year, but it goes to Cres.

Wildness

This is Cres's row and it is not close. The griffon vulture colony at Beli, the village of Lubenice on its 380-metre rock above a beach you walk down to, Lake Vrana hidden in the island's middle, a main road where sheep outnumber cars for miles. Krk has real walking -- the Baška ridge, the mountain-bike marathon in October, the paths above Vrbnik -- but it is walking between towns. Cres is walking in country.

The year

Krk keeps a calendar the island holds for itself: carnival in late January, regattas in June, Lovrečeva in August, olive days in October, Advent in December, twenty-six recurring events across eleven months, all on this site month by month. Cres town keeps a few summer events and the island is silent by October. If you might come outside July and August, Krk takes the row.

The verdict

Choose Krk for towns, beds, a bridge and a year with things in it. Choose Cres to be somewhere empty, wild and slow, and to stay a week without moving. The best answer for many people is both: a week on Krk and a second week on Cres, twenty-five minutes away.
