Krk and Hvar are the two Croatian islands people most often set against each other, and they are not really competing for the same person. One is the island you drive onto from the motorway, with an airport at its northern end and a calendar that runs from the February carnival to Advent. The other is the island you sail to, whose harbour front is the reason a certain kind of visitor comes to Croatia at all. This page puts the sourced numbers side by side and then says, plainly, who should choose which.

Getting there is the first difference, and it is a big one

Krk is joined to the mainland by a road bridge, and Rijeka Airport sits on the island at Omišalj. You land, collect a car, and are at a beach in Malinska or Baška within the hour; if you are driving from Zagreb, Ljubljana or Vienna, you never see a ferry. Hvar is reached by sea. The Jadrolinija car ferry from Split to Stari Grad takes 120 minutes, and the catamaran to Hvar town -- 65 minutes on Jadrolinija's direct line -- is for foot passengers. In July and August the ferry queue at Split is part of the holiday, whether you wanted it to be or not.

For some people this is exactly the point. The crossing draws a line between ordinary life and the island, and Hvar's visitors tend to arrive without a car and stay near the harbour. The row above gives Krk the advantage because most families and most people over sixty would rather not plan around a timetable, but it is an honest tie for anyone who likes arriving by sea.

The sea is warmer in the south, and the August is drier

This is the concession that matters. For August 2025, the daily sea-surface maximum at Hvar town averaged 25.7 °C against 23.6 °C at Krk town, read from the same weather archive at the two coordinates. Two degrees is noticeable in the water. Hvar also had far less August rain that year -- 33.2 mm against 142.2 mm -- and while one month of one year is weather rather than climate, the direction matches what anyone who has spent summers in both Kvarner and central Dalmatia already knows: the north gets more summer storms. The afternoons themselves were almost identical, 29.6 °C on Krk and 30 °C on Hvar.

If warm water and a dry August are what you are buying, Hvar is the better buy. Krk's sea in high summer is pleasant rather than bath-like, and in the Krk channel it can turn cool for a day after a bura.

Scale, stays and beds

Krk recorded 5,040,825 overnight stays in 2025 to Hvar's 1,518,768, and 940,240 arrivals to Hvar's 336,752. That is scale, not a score: Krk is a much bigger island with seven municipalities, and its nights are spread from the campsites of Omišalj and Njivice to the hotels of Baška. Hvar's visitors concentrate on Hvar town, and a smaller number of them can feel like more.

Two numbers in the same tables say more about the kind of holiday each island hosts. Guests on Krk stayed 5.4 nights per arrival in 2025; on Hvar, 4.5, the shortest of the seven islands in the statistics office's table. Hvar is somewhere people pass through on a route; Krk is somewhere they settle for a week or two. And Krk had 57,711 permanent beds to Hvar's 21,752, which is why a family can still find a campsite pitch or an apartment on Krk in July at a price that Hvar's smaller stock rarely allows.

Where Hvar simply wins

Hvar town at night. There is no Krk equivalent and this site is not going to invent one. Krk's evenings are konobas, a village fair, a klapa concert on a square; Hvar's are a harbour front with a reputation across Europe. If the evening is the reason for the trip, go to Hvar.

Where Krk simply wins

The year. Krk's calendar is on this site month by month, from the carnival that takes the town in late January to the olive harvests of October and Advent in December, and it is a calendar the island keeps for itself, not for visitors. Hvar town is superb in June and September and quiet from October. If you are coming outside the summer, or you want an island that has a life you can join rather than a season you can watch, Krk is the one.

The honest verdict

Choose Krk if you are driving or flying into Rijeka, want a wide choice of beds and seven towns rather than one, and might come in any month. Choose Hvar if the warm sea and the dry August are what you are paying for, if the harbour at night is the point, or if you are already in Split. Neither answer is wrong, and the numbers above are there so you can check ours.
