Krk vs Lošinj: the gateway island and the far one
Lošinj is the warm, pine-scented island at the end of the Kvarner chain, two ferries and a long drive from the bridge. Warmer sea, longer stays, a health-resort past; Krk has the access, the beds and the year. Sourced rows.
Choose Krk for easy arrival, variety and a year-round island. Choose Lošinj for the warmer sea, the pine-scented air of a resort built for health, and a long, slow stay at the end of the road.
Choose Lošinj if
- You want warm water: the sea at Mali Lošinj ran two degrees warmer than at Krk town in August 2025, out in the open Adriatic.
- Rest is the point of the trip. Lošinj was built as a climatic health resort, its pine woods were planted for it, and its guests stay a full night longer than Krk's.
- You are going for a week or more and want one perfect harbour town rather than seven adequate ones.
Choose Krk if
- You want to be on the island within the hour of landing or leaving the motorway, with no ferry and no long drive.
- You want variety: a different town for dinner every night, campsites and hotels, and beds at every price.
- You might come in any month; Krk's calendar runs from carnival to Advent.

Lošinj is the last island in the Kvarner chain, reached from Krk by ferry to Cres and then the whole length of Cres by road. It has been a health resort since the Habsburgs planted its pine woods for the purpose, it has warm open-sea water and dolphins, and it takes half a day to reach from the Krk bridge. Krk is the island at the other end of that road: the bridge, the airport, seven towns and a calendar. This page sets the sourced numbers side by side and gives an honest verdict.
Getting there
Krk has a road bridge and Rijeka Airport on the island itself. Lošinj has neither. The route from Krk is the Jadrolinija ferry from Valbiska to Merag on Cres -- 25 minutes on the operator's page -- and then the drive down Cres, over the little bridge at Osor, and on to Mali Lošinj. Allow half a day from the Krk bridge, more in August. There are also ferries and catamarans from the mainland and a small airfield, but for a family with a car this is the way, and it is a long one. Krk takes the row. The drive is also, in its way, the point: Lošinj is far, and it feels far.
The sea is warmer at the end of the chain
For August 2025 the daily sea-surface maximum at Mali Lošinj averaged 25.8 °C against 23.6 °C at Krk town, read from the same marine archive at the two coordinates. Two degrees is real; Lošinj sits out in open sea where Krk sits in a channel. Mali Lošinj also had less August rain that year, 93.2 mm to Krk town's 142.2 mm. One month of one year, but both rows go to Lošinj and both are rows a swimmer cares about.
Scale, stays and beds
Krk recorded 5,040,825 overnight stays in 2025 to Lošinj's 1,682,343, from 940,240 arrivals against 263,129. Three times the nights, on a much larger island with seven municipalities. Scale, not a score.
Lošinj's guests stay longer: 6.4 nights per arrival in 2025 to Krk's 5.4, a full night more. That is distance turned into a habit. Nobody makes the journey for two nights, so Lošinj's holidays are long ones, and the island is built for them -- a promenade, a harbour, hotels in the pines, and not much reason to leave.
On beds Krk is clear, 57,711 permanent beds to Lošinj's 18,931, three times the stock and a wider range from campsites to hotels. On Lošinj you book.
Health, air and dolphins
This is Lošinj's row and Krk does not contest it. Mali Lošinj was declared a climatic health resort in the nineteenth century, the pine forests around it were planted for exactly that, and the smell of them in the evening is what people remember. The waters off the island carry a resident population of bottlenose dolphins that a local institute has studied for decades. Krk's air is clean and its walks are good, but it has no equivalent identity and makes no such claim.
Towns and the year
Krk has seven municipalities and they are genuinely different: a walled capital, a wine town on a cliff, a fishing village at the end of a valley, family resorts on the west coast. Lošinj has two harbour towns, Mali and Veli, and both are lovely; it is one place done very well. Variety is Krk's row. So is the year: twenty-six recurring events across eleven months, from carnival to Advent, on this site month by month. Lošinj keeps a spring and autumn programme in Mali Lošinj and winters quietly.
The verdict
Choose Krk for easy arrival, variety and an island with a calendar. Choose Lošinj for the warmer sea, the pine air of a resort built for rest, and a long, slow stay at the end of the road. If rest is the reason for the holiday, Lošinj is the better island, and this site is happy to say so.
