Krk vs Rab: the bridge island and the island an hour beyond it
Rab is reached by ferry from Krk itself. It is warmer, drier, slower and smaller; Krk has the airport, the beds and the calendar. Sourced rows, one honest verdict.
Choose Krk to skip the ferry, for twice the choice of beds and for a year-round island. Choose Rab for the warmer, sunnier August, the slower week and the prettier old town -- and reach it through Krk.
Choose Rab if
- You want a warmer sea and a sunnier August: Rab's sea ran a degree warmer and it had half of Krk's rain in August 2025.
- You want one base and a slow week -- Rab's guests stay longer than Krk's, and Lopar's sandy bays are made for exactly that.
- Rab town's skyline is on your list; it is the prettier old town, and the Rapska fjera in July is a medieval fair worth a trip on its own.
Choose Krk if
- You are driving or flying into Rijeka and want to be swimming an hour after arrival, with no ferry at either end.
- You want choice -- seven towns, campsites to hotels, and the widest bed stock of any Adriatic island.
- You might come in any month: Krk keeps a calendar from the February carnival to Advent.

Rab is the island beyond Krk. The car ferry to it leaves from Valbiska on Krk's own west coast, so for a lot of visitors the question is not Krk or Rab but whether to carry on. This page sets the sourced numbers side by side and answers it honestly, including where Rab is simply the nicer place.
Getting there
Krk has a road bridge from the mainland and Rijeka Airport on the island at Omišalj. Rab has a ferry: Jadrolinija's line from Valbiska to Lopar takes 80 minutes according to its route page, and there is a shorter crossing from Stinica on the mainland to Mišnjak. Either way you are planning around a timetable, and in August the Valbiska queue is part of the day. Krk takes the row. But notice what the geography means: Rab is a day trip from Krk, and a week on Krk with a day on Rab is a perfectly good plan.
Rab's August is warmer and sunnier
For August 2025 the daily sea-surface maximum at Rab town averaged 24,7 °C against 23,6 °C at Krk town, read from the same marine archive. Rab had 77,2 mm of rain that month to Krk's 142,2 mm -- about half -- while the afternoons were the same, 29,7 °C on Rab and 29,6 °C on Krk. One month of one year is weather rather than climate, but Rab's reputation as the sunnier island is a century old and the numbers point the same way. Two rows to Rab, and they are the two rows a beach holiday cares about.
Scale, stays and beds
Krk recorded 5.040.825 overnight stays in 2025 to Rab's 1.946.789, from 940.240 arrivals against 296.241. Two and a half times the nights on a much larger island with seven municipalities; that is scale, and it cuts both ways. Krk has more of everything, and more people.
Rab's guests stay longer: 6,6 nights per arrival in 2025 to Krk's 5,4. Rab is a stay-put island, and a week in Lopar with the same sandy bay every morning is the normal unit of a Rab holiday. Krk's shorter average reflects its bridge as much as anything -- a weekend from Zagreb or Ljubljana is an ordinary thing to do on Krk and a strange one on Rab.
On beds Krk is clear: 57.711 permanent beds to Rab's 26.626, twice the stock, from campsites through apartments to hotels. That is what lets a family arrive in July without a January booking and still find something at a price they like.
The old town
Krk town has a walled centre with a Romanesque cathedral and the Frankopan castle on the water, and it is a fine place. Rab town is finer. Four bell towers on a narrow peninsula, seen from the water at evening, is one of the Adriatic's great views, and the Rapska fjera in late July -- a medieval fair the whole town dresses for -- is worth a trip on its own. This site is about Krk and will still say so.
The year
Krk's calendar runs from the carnival that takes the town in late January through the Punat regattas, Lovrečeva, the olive harvests and Advent, twenty-six recurring events across eleven months, all on this site month by month. Rab is quiet from October to Easter. If you might come outside the summer, or you want an island with a life to join rather than a season to watch, Krk takes the row without argument.
The verdict
Choose Krk to skip the ferry, for twice the choice of beds and for an island that is alive in March. Choose Rab for the warmer sea and sunnier August, the slower week and the prettier old town -- and remember you reach it through Krk, so you do not have to choose at all.
