Mala Sten Beach

Mala Sten is a 345-metre mixed pebble and sand beach on the southern shore of Soline Bay — one of the few beaches on Krk that combines the warm-water Soline character with a sandy patch, making it a popular family-friendly alternative to the pure pebble beaches nearby. Free parking and basic facilities round out the practical picture.

Mala Sten Beach

About

Mala Sten Beach sits on the southern shore of Soline Bay, between the small village of Klimno and the larger Čižići mud-beach area to the east. The beach is genuinely mixed: the eastern third is fine sandy shoreline (the rare sandy patch on Krk's coast); the western two-thirds transitions to fine pebble and small stones. The seabed echoes this mix — sand for the first 20 metres from the sandy section, pebble underfoot beneath the pebble shoreline.

The shoreline is about 345 metres long and 10 metres wide at average depth. Water clarity is moderate (visibility 3–5 metres) due to the bay's shallow geometry stirring sediment from the sandy floor; the trade-off is the warmest swim temperatures on the island after late July (often 27–29°C in the central bay). The orientation faces north-east, giving morning sun and afternoon shade developing across the back of the beach by mid-afternoon.

Facilities are functional: a couple of seasonal kiosks open mid-June to mid-September serving water, ice cream, beer, and grilled fish; freshwater showers at two locations along the back of the beach; basic toilets near the central kiosk; free parking in long gravel lots above the shore. The lots have generous capacity and rarely fill even in peak August.

The sandy patch at the eastern end is the practical attraction for families with very young children — toddlers can play in the sand and walk into the warm shallow water without the discomfort of pebble underfoot. Older children and adults gravitate towards the pebble central and western sections where the loungers (informal — no rental service) are easier to set up.

Mala Sten is the right beach for families with very young children who want a sandy-surface swim with Soline Bay's warm water, visitors who prefer the cooler back-of-beach shade in midsummer afternoons, and travellers exploring Soline Bay who want a low-stress alternative to the busier mud beaches. It's not the right beach for visitors expecting clear blue Adriatic water — Soline Bay's character is warm and slightly murky, fundamentally different from the open-coast beaches.

The surrounding area is the rural farming heart of Krk's north-east: small olive groves, vineyards, and the slow rhythm of Klimno and Čižići villages. Several family apartments in both villages cater specifically to mud-cure repeat visitors who use Mala Sten as a quieter swim option in their week-long routines.

The name 'Mala Sten' translates roughly as 'small wall', referring to the low limestone outcrop separating the sandy and pebble sections — a geographic quirk that gives the beach its mixed character.

Tips for visiting

Frequently asked questions

Is there a real sandy section at Mala Sten?

Yes — the eastern third of the beach is genuinely sandy shoreline with sandy seabed extending 20+ metres from shore. Sandy beaches are rare on Krk, which is part of what draws families specifically to Mala Sten.

Is Mala Sten a mud beach like Meline?

No — Mala Sten is a swim beach without the therapeutic mud tradition of nearby Meline, Slanica, and Čižići. The Soline Bay water is the same (warm, moderately clear) but the seabed here is sandy and pebble rather than mud.

Is parking free?

Yes — long free gravel lots along the road above the beach. Generous capacity that rarely fills even in peak August.

Are there restaurants on the beach?

A couple of seasonal kiosks (mid-June to mid-September) serve water, ice cream, beer, and grilled fish. For more substantial dining, drive 5 minutes to Klimno or Čižići, or 15 minutes to Krk Town.

Is the water clear at Mala Sten?

Moderate — typically 3–5 metres visibility on calm days. Soline Bay's shallow geometry stirs sediment from the sandy floor, so the water is warmer but less clear than the open-coast beaches. For crystal-clear water head to the south or west coasts.
