Petrina Beach

Petrina is a 250-metre mixed pebble and rocky beach south of Šilo on Krk's east coast — bigger and more substantial than the small coves nearby, with free parking and decent water clarity. The mix of pebble shoreline and rocky margins makes it a versatile choice for snorkellers and swimmers who want some variety in one stop.

About

Petrina Beach occupies a stretch of the east coast about 3 km south of Šilo village, in a small protected bay between the busier Šilo seafront and the wilder coastline running towards Vrbnik. The shoreline is mixed: about 250 metres of fine pebble interrupted by rocky platforms and ledges, particularly at the southern end where the bay opens to the open sea.

The seabed is uniformly pebble out to swimming depth, gradually deepening, with rocky patches near the southern margins. Water clarity is good (visibility 5–7 metres on calm days) thanks to the open eastern exposure. The bay faces east-south-east, giving morning and midday sun, with afternoon shade developing across the back of the beach by 14:00.

Facilities are minimal but include free parking in a small gravel lot 50 metres back from the beach (capacity around 25 cars; rarely full), a couple of picnic tables at the back, and… that's about it. No kiosks, no rental loungers, no toilets or formal showers. Pack water, snacks, sunscreen, and a bag for rubbish.

The practical attraction is the combination of road access + reasonable size + lack of crowds. Many east-coast visitors discover Petrina as a stop on the drive between Šilo and Vrbnik and return for the next day's swim. Local Krk residents from the surrounding villages form most of the regular visitor base; international tourist density is low because the beach isn't actively promoted.

Petrina is the right beach for visitors driving the east-coast loop who want a quiet swim stop with road access, snorkellers seeking rocky-margin habitat without committing to a long hike or boat, and families wanting a low-stress beach with manageable crowd levels. It's not the right beach for visitors expecting amenities — for that, head north to busy Šilo or south to Vrbnik.

The wider east-coast Krk character around Petrina is rural and slow: small farms, fenced olive groves, and the occasional shepherd's stone shelter on the hillside above the road. Mid-July through mid-August, Petrina hosts maybe 20–30 swimmers at peak hours; outside that window the beach is essentially empty. Off-season visits in late September and early October are particularly rewarding — water still warm enough to swim comfortably, the surrounding scrub turning amber with autumn colours, and the rocky tide pools at the southern end exposed at low tide for kids to explore. Local fishermen launch small boats from the rocky margins on calm mornings — a reliable sign that the conditions are good for swimming.

Tips for visiting

Frequently asked questions

Are there any facilities at Petrina?

Minimal — free parking lot, a couple of picnic tables. No kiosks, toilets, showers, or rental loungers. Pack everything for the day including a bag for rubbish.

Is Petrina good for snorkelling?

Yes — the rocky southern margin has small fish concentrations and the visibility is generally 5–7 metres on calm days. Better than the pure pebble Šilo beaches; not as good as boat-only Lončarica in Soline Bay.

Is parking free at Petrina?

Yes — free gravel lot about 50 metres above the beach. Capacity around 25 cars; rarely full thanks to the lack of amenities filtering out tourist density.

Is Petrina suitable for children?

Yes — gradual pebble entry in the central section, manageable crowd levels, small enough that kids stay within visual range easily. Not lifeguarded; supervise as you would on any non-supervised beach.

What's nearby for after-swim food?

Šilo village (3 km north) has small konobas and a daily fish market. Vrbnik (15 km south) has more substantial dining options including cliff-top konobas with views and Žlahtina wine. Driving to either is the practical option.
