Golden Bay

Golden Bay is one of Krk's most-photographed boat-only coves — a small 85-metre pebble crescent on the south-western coast near Stara Baška, framed by the dramatic golden-coloured limestone cliffs that gave the bay its name. The water is exceptionally clear; the only way in is by sea; and the result is a daily summer rotation of yachts at anchor and taxi-boat day visitors.

Golden Bay

About

Golden Bay sits on the south-western coast of Krk Island, between Stara Baška village and the open Adriatic. It's one of a string of small coves along this stretch — Oprna (Tier-1) and several unnamed bays neighbour it — that are accessible only by sea. There is no land trail down: the cliffs above are sheer enough that the only practical way in is on a boat.

The beach itself is a small pebble crescent — about 85 metres long and just 8 metres deep at average — set beneath limestone cliffs that catch the late-afternoon sun in a distinctive warm gold-orange colour. Hence the name. The bay opens west-south-west, so the golden cliff-light effect peaks roughly 17:00–19:00 in summer; morning visits get cooler tones and partial cliff shade on the water.

The water is exceptional. The pebble seabed is uniform, gradually deepening, with very clear water — visibility on calm days commonly reaches 10 metres or more. Snorkelling around the rocky margins of the cove turns up small fish, hermit crabs, sea urchins, and the occasional octopus. There's no current in normal conditions and the cove is well sheltered from the dominant southerly winds by the surrounding headlands.

There are no facilities at all. No showers, no toilets, no kiosk, no fresh water of any kind. Bring everything you need for the day: water, snacks, sunscreen, snorkel gear, and a bag for your rubbish. Even a basic toilet is not available — visitors typically arrange to return to Stara Baška for any extended needs.

Getting there: taxi boats from Stara Baška harbour run regularly in summer (June through mid-September), typically €15–25 per person round trip with the operator setting your pickup time for the return. Many private boats anchor in the bay for an afternoon swim and lunch — the holding is good in 5–8 metres of sand and the bay easily accommodates 3-5 yachts at once without crowding. Boat-tour operators from Punat, Krk Town, and Baška include Golden Bay on most south-coast snorkel-tour itineraries.

Golden Bay is the right beach for visitors with access to a boat (private, taxi, or organised tour) who want the most-photographed boat-only swim on Krk, photographers chasing the late-afternoon golden-cliff light, and snorkellers looking for clear water without crowds. It's not accessible to land-based visitors — anyone planning a beach day from a hotel needs to book a taxi-boat or boat tour in advance.

Tips for visiting

Frequently asked questions

Is there a hiking trail to Golden Bay?

No — the cliffs above the bay are sheer enough that there's no practical land trail. Boat access is the only way in. Taxi boats from Stara Baška, private boats, or organised boat tours all reach it easily.

How much does the taxi boat cost?

Around €15–25 per person round trip from Stara Baška harbour in 2024 prices, with the operator setting your pickup time for the return. Schedule and current pricing posted at the harbour kiosk.

Why is it called Golden Bay?

The limestone cliffs surrounding the cove catch the late-afternoon sun in a distinctive warm gold-orange colour, peaking roughly 17:00–19:00 in summer. The effect is striking enough that the bay's local name has stuck in English even though Croatian sources sometimes use other names.

Are there any facilities at Golden Bay?

None at all. No showers, toilets, kiosks, or fresh water. Bring everything you need for the day, including a bag for your rubbish. Most visitors plan their trip around a taxi-boat schedule that returns them to Stara Baška for extended needs.

When is the best time to visit Golden Bay?

Early June or mid-September for solitude; mid-afternoon to early evening for the golden cliff-light effect. Mid-July through mid-August has 3–5 yachts in the bay on most afternoons; outside that window you may have it to yourself.
