Pod Crikvun Beach

Pod Crikvun is a 320-metre mixed pebble and concrete beach west of Njivice village — the local name translates roughly to 'below the church', referring to the small chapel above the bay. Quieter than central Njivice's busy Kijac, with free parking and basic facilities, it's the practical local choice for visitors based in Njivice's western apartments.

About

Pod Crikvun Beach occupies a long stretch of coastline west of Njivice village centre, on the western coast of Krk. The local name translates as 'below the church' — referring to a small chapel of unknown saint that sits on the slope above the bay; the chapel is typically locked except for the saint's feast day but the views over the bay from the chapel terrace are worth a 5-minute walk.

The shoreline is mixed — about 320 metres of fine pebble interrupted by concrete bathing platforms in the central section — with a uniform pebble seabed and gradual entry. Water clarity is good (visibility 5–7 metres on calm days); the bay's western orientation gives full afternoon and evening sun, with sunset visible from the beach throughout summer.

Facilities are basic but functional: freshwater showers and public toilets at two locations along the beach, free parking in gravel lots set back 100 metres from the shoreline, and a small kiosk selling water and ice cream (open mid-June to mid-September). No beach bar or rental loungers — the practical character is more residential than resort.

Most visitors are local Njivice residents and central European tourists based in Njivice's western apartments. International tourist density is meaningfully lower than at central Njivice's Kijac (Tier-1), making Pod Crikvun a useful alternative when Kijac feels too busy in peak July to mid-August.

Pod Crikvun is the right beach for travellers based in western Njivice or Vantačići-area apartments wanting walking-distance swimming with less crowd density, families wanting calm sheltered swimming with the freedom to set up their own picnic, and visitors preferring a quieter alternative to the busy main Njivice beach. It's not the right beach for visitors expecting rental loungers or beach bars — for that, walk east to Kijac (15 minutes along the coastal path).

For evening dining, walk back into central Njivice (15 minutes east along the coastal path) for the village's restaurant variety. Pod Crikvun has no on-site restaurants; the seasonal kiosk is the only food source on the beach.

The small chapel above Pod Crikvun is dedicated to a locally venerated but not formally canonised saint — older Njivice residents refer to the chapel's name with affectionate vagueness ('the little church above the bay'). On Sunday mornings in summer, a small group of older locals occasionally walks up from the village for an informal observance; the chapel is otherwise locked, but the views over the bay from the small terrace outside the chapel reward a 5-minute walk up from the beach.

Tips for visiting

Frequently asked questions

What does 'Pod Crikvun' mean?

Roughly 'below the church' in Croatian — referring to a small chapel of unknown saint on the slope above the bay. The chapel is typically locked except for the saint's feast day but the chapel terrace offers good views over the bay.

Is Pod Crikvun less crowded than Kijac?

Yes, meaningfully — Pod Crikvun's location west of central Njivice and lack of beach bars or rental loungers keeps tourist density meaningfully lower than at busy central Kijac. Useful as a fallback when Kijac feels too packed in peak July to mid-August.

Are there facilities at Pod Crikvun?

Basic: freshwater showers, public toilets, and a small seasonal kiosk for water and snacks. No beach bar or rental loungers. Free parking. For more amenities, walk 15 minutes east to Kijac.

Is parking free at Pod Crikvun?

Yes — free gravel lots set back 100 metres from the shoreline. Capacity is generous and rarely fills even in peak August thanks to the lack of amenities filtering out tourist density.

Is Pod Crikvun suitable for families?

Yes — gradual pebble entry, calm bay, basic toilets and showers, walking distance from central Njivice restaurants. The lack of lifeguards and beach bars makes it less family-tourist-oriented than Kijac, but more relaxed in atmosphere.
