Melska Beach
Melska is a small 80-metre quiet pebble cove north of Vrbnik on Krk's east coast — minimal infrastructure, very clear water, and almost no other visitors most days. The kind of beach Krk locals know but tourists drive past, ideal for a quick afternoon swim if you're already exploring the Vrbnik wine country.

Descrizione
Melska Beach occupies a small bay on the east coast of Krk, between Vrbnik and the small village of Risika. The setting is rural-Krk-typical: olive groves on the slope behind, the slow tempo of an area dominated by farming rather than tourism, and a small bay that opens east-south-east towards the open Adriatic.
The shoreline is fine pebble — about 80 metres long and 10 metres wide at average depth — with a uniform pebble seabed and gradual entry. Water clarity is excellent thanks to the open exposure to the eastern Adriatic and the lack of any commercial development to stir up sediment — visibility on calm days commonly reaches 7–8 metres. The bay's eastern orientation gives morning and midday sun, with afternoon shade developing across the back of the beach by mid-afternoon.
There are no facilities of any kind. No kiosk, no toilets, no shower, no rental loungers. Free parking is on the road shoulder above the beach — capacity for maybe 6–8 cars informally. The lot rarely has more than 2–3 cars even in peak August.
The surrounding area is east-coast wine country: Žlahtina vineyards in the surrounding valleys, several small farms producing olive oil and aged sheep cheese, and the historic clifftop town of Vrbnik 4 km south as the nearest village. Most Melska visitors are repeat Croatian or German tourists who discovered the cove years ago and pair it with their Vrbnik wine-country base.
Melska is the right beach for visitors based in Vrbnik who want a daily morning swim away from the crowds at Zgribnica, travellers exploring east-coast wine country who want a quick beach break, and anyone seeking the quiet wild-cove experience without a long hike. It's not the right beach for visitors expecting any kind of amenities or families with very young children given the lack of toilets.
The practical combination: morning swim at Melska (or before heading to Vrbnik), Vrbnik old town walking + lunch + a Žlahtina cellar tasting in the afternoon. That's the local rhythm for a full Vrbnik wine-country day. Off-season visits in late September and early October are particularly rewarding — the water is still warm enough to swim comfortably, and the surrounding vineyards are heavy with grapes ready for harvest.
Bird life along this stretch of east-coast cliff is unusual for Krk: kestrels nest in the limestone fissures above the cove, and Mediterranean shearwaters can occasionally be spotted flying low over the open Adriatic at dawn and dusk. Quiet visitors with binoculars find the early morning particularly rewarding.

Domande frequenti
Are there any facilities at Melska?
None — no kiosks, toilets, showers, or rental loungers. Free roadside parking and a short walking trail down. Pack everything for the day including a bag for rubbish.
How do I find Melska from the road?
From Vrbnik, drive north towards Risika and watch for an unmarked roadside pull-off on the seaward side after about 4 km. The footpath to the beach starts on the same side. The cove isn't visible from the road; the worn footpath is the best clue.
Is Melska crowded in summer?
No — even in peak August the small parking pull-off rarely has more than 2–3 cars. The lack of facilities and the unmarked access keeps it off most tourist circuits.
Is Melska good for snorkelling?
Modest but pleasant — the rocky margins of the cove host small fish, sea urchins, and occasional octopus. Visibility on calm mornings reaches 7–8 metres. Bring your own gear.
What's nearby in Vrbnik wine country?
Vrbnik town's medieval centre (4 km south) for sightseeing and lunch; multiple Žlahtina white wine cellars in the surrounding valleys for tastings on advance booking; small olive oil and cheese producers throughout the area; the famous narrow Klančić alley and Glagolitic-script museum in town.
