Potovošće

Potovošće is a small unspoiled pebble cove on Krk's quiet eastern coast, 4 kilometres south of the historic clifftop town of Vrbnik. With no facilities, a short forest path from the road above, and views of the open Vinodol channel, it's a local favourite for a calm half-day swim away from the tourist circuit.

Potovošće

About

Potovošće is the kind of beach that's known by Krk locals and almost no one else. It sits in a small cove on the eastern coast, between Vrbnik and the small village of Risika. The bay opens east-south-east towards the open sea, with the mainland Vinodol coast visible across the channel — a striking contrast with the urban beaches of the western coast.

Access is by a short forest path from a small free parking pull-off on the road above. The trail descends about 30 metres over 200 metres of well-worn dirt; manageable for most adults but not stroller-suitable. The path passes through a stand of mixed pine and aromatic Mediterranean shrubs (juniper, sage, immortelle), giving the descent a dry, herbal smell distinctive to the Krk landscape. Once at the beach, you'll find roughly 180 metres of small pebble, with a uniformly pebble seabed and gradual entry. Water clarity is excellent — typically 8 metres of visibility on a calm day — thanks to the open exposure and minimal local development.

There are no facilities of any kind. No showers, toilets, kiosks, or rental loungers. The trade-off is that Potovošće rarely sees more than 30–40 visitors at peak hours in August. Most other days you'll have it to yourself or share with a handful of locals from Vrbnik who walk down for a morning swim before the workday.

Snorkelling around the rocky margins of the bay is good — fish life, sea urchins, and the occasional octopus. The eastern margin has a small underwater ledge that drops to about 6 metres, with crevices that host moray eels and small grouper. The bay is open enough that easterly winds (rare in summer) can chop up the surface; check the forecast on calm-day forecasts via local marine apps.

Vrbnik above the beach is one of the most-photographed clifftop villages on the Adriatic — a tightly packed grid of stone houses perched on a 50-metre limestone bluff, with views across to the mainland. The village is famous for the Žlahtina white wine grown in the surrounding valleys. After a Potovošće swim, the standard combination is to drive 4 km north to Vrbnik, lunch at one of the cliff-top konobas, and tour a small Žlahtina cellar in the afternoon.

Potovošće is the right beach if you're staying in Vrbnik or doing the eastern coast loop and want a peaceful pebble swim. It's not the right beach if you need amenities or are travelling with anyone unable to manage the short trail down.

Quick facts

How to get there

From Vrbnik, drive south on the local coastal road for about 4 km. Look for a small unmarked gravel pull-off on the seaward side of the road; locals park along this stretch. The trail down to the beach starts on the same side, marked by a worn sign. Allow 5–7 minutes to walk down. From Krk Town, allow 30 minutes by car.
