Zaglav Beach

Zaglav is a 140-metre quiet pebble cove on Krk's south-western coast near Stara Baška — narrow but accessible by foot via a 15-minute coastal trail from the village above. The combination of foot access, complete absence of facilities, and the dramatic south-coast cliff backdrop makes it a steady choice for visitors willing to walk for solitude.

Zaglav Beach

About

Zaglav Beach sits in a small cove on Krk's south-western coast, between Stara Baška village and the boat-only string of bays further south. Unlike its neighbours Drenova, Pečen, and Golden Bay (all boat-only), Zaglav can be reached on foot via a coastal trail descending about 80 metres of vertical drop over 600 metres of trail length from a roadside parking area above.

The trail is rocky in places and unmarked beyond Stara Baška's edge — local knowledge or attentive map-reading helps. Allow 15–20 minutes down, 25 minutes back up. Closed shoes are essential; flip-flops are uncomfortable on the loose stones.

The shoreline is fine pebble — about 140 metres long but narrow at 7 metres wide between the back of the beach and the water — set beneath limestone cliffs typical of this stretch of coast. The pebble continues as the seabed, gradually deepening, with very clear water — visibility on calm mornings commonly reaches 8–9 metres. The bay opens south-west, giving full afternoon and evening sun.

No facilities exist on the beach. No toilets, no shower, no kiosk, no rental loungers. Bring water (at least 1.5 litres per person — the trail back up is hot in summer), snacks, sunscreen, snorkel gear, and a bag for your rubbish.

The practical attraction versus the boat-only neighbours is the foot access. Visitors who can manage the trail get the same wild-cove south-coast experience without the cost or scheduling friction of a boat. The trade-off is the climb back up: noticeably harder than the descent, particularly in midsummer heat. Carry water for the return.

Zaglav is the right beach for fit visitors willing to trade comfort for solitude on Krk's south coast, hikers exploring the network of unmarked coastal trails out of Stara Baška, and travellers wanting an alternative to the boat-only neighbours. It's not appropriate for visitors with mobility limitations, families with very young children given the trail, or anyone expecting amenities.

The broader south-coast trail network connects Zaglav to several smaller unnamed coves and to viewpoints over the boat-only bays. Knowledgeable hikers can spend a full day exploring this stretch with multiple swim stops; visitors should bring detailed maps or a GPS app since trails are largely unmarked.

Mediterranean flora along the Zaglav trail rewards botanically curious visitors: wild rosemary, sage, lavender, and several thyme species line the path, with prickly pear cacti and centuries-old olive trees scattered on the slopes. Late spring (May to early June) brings the area into full bloom; the herbal scent in the warmth of the sun is one of the trail's understated rewards.

Tips for visiting

Frequently asked questions

How hard is the trail to Zaglav?

Moderate — about 80 metres of vertical descent over 600 metres of trail, with rocky and loose-stone sections. Allow 15-20 minutes down, 25 back up. Manageable for fit adults; not stroller-suitable; not appropriate for visitors with mobility limitations.

Can I get to Zaglav by car?

Drive to a roadside pull-off about 1 km past Stara Baška village; from there, the trail is on foot. There's no road access to the cove itself.

Are there any facilities at Zaglav?

None. No toilets, showers, kiosks, or rental loungers. Bring everything for the day including a rubbish bag. The lack of facilities and walking access keeps the cove quiet.

Is Zaglav good for snorkelling?

Yes — the rocky margins host small fish and visibility on calm mornings commonly reaches 8–9 metres. Bring your own gear; nothing is rented on site.

How does Zaglav compare to Tier-1's Oprna nearby?

Both are foot-access south-coast coves with similar character. Oprna's trail is shorter (15 min from a closer pull-off); Zaglav's is slightly longer. Both have crystal water, no facilities, and the dramatic cliff backdrop. Oprna is more famous and consequently more crowded; Zaglav stays quieter.
