Pješčana Beach (Šilo)

Pješčana — literally 'Sandy Beach' in Croatian — is one of the rare genuinely sandy beaches on Krk, a small 70-metre crescent on the eastern coast in front of Šilo village. The fine sand and shallow warm water make it the obvious family choice in an area otherwise dominated by pebble and rocky coves.

About

Pješčana sits in a small protected bay below Šilo village on Krk's north-east coast. The defining feature is the surface: fine sand throughout the shoreline and the seabed for 30+ metres before reaching swimming depth, an unusual configuration for Krk where most coast is pebble or rock. Sand-loving families specifically seek out Pješčana when staying in the area or driving over for the day from Krk Town.

The beach is small — about 70 metres long and 8 metres wide at average depth — and the bay is protected from the dominant winds by the surrounding shoreline geometry. Water temperature warms steadily through summer thanks to the shallow protected setup, often reaching 26–28°C in late July. Visibility is moderate (3–5 metres) due to the sandy bottom; on calm days it improves but stays gentler than the open-coast pebble beaches.

Facilities are basic but adequate: freshwater showers and toilets at the back of the beach, free parking in a small gravel lot 50 metres back, and a couple of seasonal kiosks (mid-June to mid-September) selling water, ice cream, and light snacks. There's no formal lifeguard service but the small size and gradual entry mean the bay is essentially self-supervised.

Šilo village itself is a small fishing-and-tourist village on the eastern coast — quieter than the western-coast resort towns but with a few small konobas, a daily fish market in summer, and several family-run apartments catering to repeat visitors. Most Pješčana visitors are families staying in the village or central European mud-cure regulars from Soline Bay (15 km west) who drive over for a sandy-beach change-of-pace day.

Pješčana is the right beach for families with very young children wanting a sandy entry on Krk's east coast, day-trip visitors from the Soline Bay area looking for sand variety, and travellers based in Šilo who want walking-distance swimming. It's not the right beach for solitude — the sandy patch concentrates visitors more densely than the surrounding pebble beaches — and it's not the right beach for clear-water swimming, which the eastern Adriatic open coast does much better.

The practical day-trip routing for Soline-area visitors: morning at Meline or Slanica for the mud-cure routine, mid-day drive 15 km east to Pješčana for the sandy-beach change of pace and lunch in Šilo village, afternoon swim back at Pješčana, then late-afternoon return to the Soline-area apartments. The combination gives families a full-spectrum east-coast Krk day without relocating accommodation.

Tips for visiting

Frequently asked questions

Is Pješčana really sandy?

Yes — fine sand on the shoreline and a sandy seabed extending 30+ metres before reaching swimming depth. Sandy beaches are rare on Krk (most coast is pebble or rocky), which is why this small beach attracts families specifically for the sand.

Is Pješčana good for very young children?

Yes — the gradual sandy entry, calm protected bay, warm water (26–28°C in late summer), and back-of-beach toilets and showers make it one of the most family-friendly options on Krk's east coast.

Is parking free?

Yes — free gravel parking lot about 50 metres from the beach. Capacity is modest (around 25 cars); arrive before 11:00 in peak summer for a spot.

Are there restaurants near Pješčana?

Šilo village's small konobas are 5 minutes' walk away. The village's daily fish market in summer mornings sells fresh catch directly off the boats — many konobas buy from there for the day's specials.

How does Pješčana compare to Krk's other sandy beaches?

Of Krk's few sandy beaches, Pješčana is among the smallest. Sv. Marek (also east coast, near Vrbnik) is similar in surface but slightly larger; Meline in Soline Bay is the largest sandy beach but also has the mud-cure tradition that not all visitors want. Pješčana is the most straightforward small-sand-beach experience on the east coast.
