Croatia vs France: the Riviera and Corsica against the Adriatic

France is the most visited country on earth and its Mediterranean coast is the Riviera, Provence and Corsica. Croatia is a tenth of the size as a destination, with a clearer sea, free beaches and islands a day's drive from central Europe. Sourced numbers and a verdict.

Choose Croatia for a clearer, calmer, island-strewn sea with free beaches, and the drive from the east. Choose France for the Riviera, Corsica's warmer water, the food, and a country with everything else in it.

France is the most visited country on earth and Croatia is a tenth of its size as a destination: 457 644 262 nights in tourist accommodation in 2024 to 93 643 696, from 181 099 649 arrivals against 20 239 316, with 5 070 615 bed-places to 1 177 999. France has 68 882 600 people to Croatia's 3 874 350. So this is not a comparison of countries. It is a comparison of two Mediterranean coasts -- the Riviera, Provence and Corsica against the Adriatic -- for someone who has to choose one summer.

Where France wins

Food. This site is about Croatia and it is not going to argue with France about food. Croatia's table is very good, island wines and konoba cooking and prosciutto and oil under EU protection; France's is France's.

Everything else in the country. Paris, the Alps, the Loire, Provence, the Atlantic coast. Croatia has Zagreb, Plitvice and the Istrian interior, all worth a week, and that is roughly the list. If the coast is one part of a bigger trip, France offers the bigger trip.

Corsica, honestly. It is the true rival to Croatia's islands: a granite coast as fine as any in the Adriatic, a warmer sea, mountains behind. It needs a ferry or a flight, and its season matches Croatia's, but for the island itself it is a fair fight and this page says so.

The season on the Riviera, which is mild in winter where Croatia's coast is closed.

Where Croatia wins

The beach. Croatia's beaches are public and free almost everywhere; you bring a towel and find a rock. Much of the Riviera runs on private beach clubs with loungers by the row, and the Languedoc's sand is a different coast again. This is a difference of kind, not of price -- the price rows carry Eurostat's numbers, and France is the dearer on both -- but the row is real.

The sea. Clear, calm, tideless, with islands in sight from almost every beach, and sailing water that a family can charter in. France's Mediterranean has Corsica and the Îles d'Hyères and then not much; Croatia has over a thousand islands a short ferry apart.

August. The Riviera in August is one of Europe's most crowded shores. Croatia is busy too -- Dubrovnik and Hvar town are at capacity -- but its islands spread the load and its towns are still towns.

The drive, for the east of Europe. From Vienna, Budapest or Bavaria the Adriatic is a day in the car and the Riviera is further; from Milan or Munich the two are about level. Krk, the first Croatian island, is a bridge and has Rijeka Airport on it.

And within Croatia, why Krk

Because it is the island you reach first, and the one you can reach without a boat. Krk is joined to the mainland by a road bridge, Rijeka Airport sits on the island at Omišalj, and the motorway from Zagreb puts you on it in about ninety minutes. It recorded 5 040 825 overnight stays in 2025 from 940 240 arrivals across seven municipalities -- a walled capital, a wine town on a cliff, a fishing village at the end of a valley, family resorts on the west coast -- with 57 711 permanent beds, the largest stock of any Croatian island. Its calendar runs from the carnival in late January to Advent, twenty-six recurring events across eleven months, all on this site. It is the Croatia that Croatians, Austrians, Germans and Slovenes drive to every year, and it is a good place to find out whether the country is for you.

The verdict

Choose Croatia for a clearer, calmer, island-strewn sea with free beaches, and for the drive from central and eastern Europe. Choose France for the Riviera, for Corsica's warmer water, for the food, and for a country with everything else in it. If the island is the point, Corsica against Krk, Rab and Hvar is the honest contest -- and Croatia's are a ferry apart where Corsica is a ferry away.
