Krk vs Dalmatia: the northern island against the famous south

Dalmatia is Split, Hvar, Brač, Makarska and Dubrovnik -- warmer, drier, more famous and a much longer drive. Krk is the island you reach first. Sourced rows against central Dalmatia's county, and a verdict that says who should go south.

Choose Krk for the island you reach first, without a ferry, with a bridge, an airport and more beds than Hvar and Brač combined. Choose Dalmatia for the warmer, drier south, the famous names, and a city with a Roman palace at its heart.

"Should we go to Krk or to Dalmatia?" is the question the driving families of Vienna, Munich and Budapest ask every spring, and it is really a question about how far south to go. Dalmatia is the famous Croatia: Split with its Roman palace, Hvar's harbour, Zlatni rat on Brač, Dubrovnik's walls an hour further on. Krk is the first island you reach, ninety minutes past Zagreb, with a bridge, an airport and a calendar. This page sets the sourced numbers side by side and says plainly who should keep driving.

What is being compared

Dalmatia is four counties -- Zadar, Šibenik-Knin, Split-Dalmatia and Dubrovnik-Neretva -- and no statistical unit, so this page compares Krk with Split-Dalmatia County, the part most visitors mean and the largest of the four by a distance. It holds Split, Trogir, Makarska, Hvar and Brač. Where a row says Dalmatia it means that county, and the numbers are the county's. Krk is one island. The county recorded 18 436 939 overnight stays in 2025 to Krk's 5 040 825, from 3 860 446 arrivals against 940 240 -- three and a half times the nights across a city, a riviera and two large islands. Scale, not a score. All four Dalmatian counties together recorded 42 630 777 overnight stays -- more than eight times Krk's, and a sum of the four county figures rather than a statistic anyone publishes.

The drive, and the ferry at the end of it

Krk's road bridge is about ninety minutes from Zagreb's ring road and Rijeka Airport is on the island at Omišalj. Split is four hours from Zagreb by motorway, and its islands are a ferry beyond the port -- in August, a queue beyond the port. For anyone arriving by car from central Europe, this is the row that decides most holidays: Krk is the first island and Dalmatia the last. For anyone flying into Split, the row flips, because Hvar and Brač are then a short ferry from the airport and Krk is a day's drive north.

The south is warmer and drier

For August 2025 the daily sea-surface maximum at Split averaged 25,7 °C against 23,6 °C at Krk town, read from the same marine archive. Split had 90,4 mm of rain that month to Krk town's 142,2 mm. The afternoons were the same, 29,7 °C to 29,6 °C. One month of one year, but the direction is the one every Croatian knows: the south has the warmer sea and the drier summer, and Kvarner has the storms. Two rows to Dalmatia, and they are the two that a beach holiday is about.

Krk against Dalmatia's islands

Set Krk against the county's own islands and the picture changes. Krk had 57 711 permanent beds in 2025; Hvar had 21 752 and Brač 20 934. Krk alone has more accommodation than the two most famous Dalmatian islands together, which is why a family can still find a campsite pitch or an apartment in July on Krk at a price that Hvar's stock does not allow. And Krk's visitors are spread over seven towns and forty kilometres of island, where Hvar's concentrate on one harbour. Busy, yes. At capacity, no. Split, Hvar town and Dubrovnik in August are at capacity, with cruise ships and ferry queues to prove it.

Fame

Dalmatia is the Croatia of the films and the postcards, and Krk is not going to pretend otherwise. Diocletian's palace, the harbour at Hvar, the beach at Bol, the walls of Dubrovnik: these are names abroad. Krk is a name in Croatia, Austria, Germany, Slovenia and northern Italy -- the Croatia of the people who drive down every year -- and almost nowhere else. If the trip is about seeing the famous places, go south. If it is about a place you will come back to, the north has a case.

The year

Split is a real city and has a real winter, which none of the islands in this series can say. Krk keeps twenty-six recurring events across eleven months -- the carnival in late January, the Punat regattas, Lovrečeva, the olive harvests, Advent -- on this site month by month, and Krk town is alive in March in a way Hvar town and Makarska are not. An honest tie: the county has Split, the island has its calendar.

The verdict

Choose Krk for the island you reach first, without a ferry, with a bridge and an airport and more beds than Hvar and Brač combined. Choose Dalmatia for the warmer, drier south, the famous names, and a city with a Roman palace at its heart -- and for the islands, if you are flying into Split. The families who do both usually end up with a rule: Dalmatia for the one big trip, Krk for every other year.
