Vajavina Beach

Vajavina is a small 90-metre mixed beach near Vrbnik town with concrete platforms, pebble shoreline, and rocky margins — the unusual combination of all three surface types in one cove gives visitors flexibility, and the proximity to Vrbnik's clifftop centre makes it a convenient swim stop after a wine cellar tour.

Vajavina Beach

About

Vajavina sits in a small bay below Vrbnik town, separate from the main Zgribnica beach (Tier-1) on the other side of the headland. The shoreline mixes three surface types within 90 metres of coastline: fine pebble in the central section, concrete bathing platforms at the western end, and rocky ledges and small platforms at the eastern margin. This unusual variety is part of the attraction — visitors can pick their preferred entry style without changing beaches.

The seabed is uniformly pebble out to swimming depth, gradually deepening, with very clear water — visibility on calm days commonly reaches 6–8 metres thanks to the open exposure to the eastern Adriatic. The bay faces east-south-east, giving morning and midday sun on the water, with afternoon shade developing across the back of the beach by 15:00.

Facilities are basic: free roadside parking 50 metres above the beach, a couple of bench-style picnic spots at the back of the beach, and… that's about it. No kiosk, no rental loungers, no formal toilets. Vrbnik town's facilities are a 5-minute drive away for proper amenities.

The defining feature is the Vrbnik view: from the water, you see the medieval town walls perched on the 50-metre limestone cliff to the south. The angle is slightly different from Zgribnica's view (which sits directly below the cliff) — Vajavina gives you a fuller perspective of the town's setting, with the surrounding coastline visible alongside the walls.

Vajavina is the right beach for visitors staying in Vrbnik who want an alternative to busy Zgribnica, photographers wanting a different angle on the Vrbnik clifftop view, and visitors who prefer a quieter swim with surface-type flexibility. It's not the right beach for visitors expecting amenities — for that, head to Zgribnica or one of the larger Krk Town beaches.

The wider Vrbnik area is east-coast Krk's wine country: Žlahtina vineyards in the surrounding valleys, several family-run cellars offering tastings on advance booking, and the historic town centre with the famous narrow Klančić alley and the Glagolitic-script museum. After-swim lunch in the old town is the standard combination — multiple cliff-top konobas serve grilled fish + local wine.

The local rhythm pairs Vajavina with the Žlahtina wine cycle: morning swims through summer, after-swim coffee at one of Vrbnik's clifftop cafés, and afternoon cellar tastings (€10–25 per visit, advance booking essential) at the family-run wineries scattered around Vrbnik's surrounding valleys. The wine harvest in mid-September is the year's high point — visitors during harvest week can sometimes join a cellar pressing demonstration.

Tips for visiting

Frequently asked questions

How is Vajavina different from Zgribnica?

Both are below Vrbnik but on different sides of the headland. Zgribnica (Tier-1) is the larger main beach with full facilities; Vajavina is smaller, quieter, no facilities, and offers three surface types in one cove. Different angle on the cliff view too.

Are there any facilities at Vajavina?

No — no kiosks, toilets, showers, or rental loungers. Free roadside parking and a couple of picnic benches at the back. Vrbnik town's facilities are 5 minutes' drive away.

Can I see Vrbnik town from Vajavina beach?

Yes — the medieval town walls on the 50-metre clifftop are visible to the south. The angle is fuller than Zgribnica's directly-below view, showing the surrounding coastline alongside the walls.

Is Vajavina good for snorkelling?

Modest — the rocky eastern margin has small fish but the central pebble section is uneventful underwater. For better snorkelling on the east coast head further south to one of the secluded coves between Vrbnik and Risika.

What can I combine with a Vajavina visit?

Vrbnik old-town walking tour (medieval streets, Klančić alley, Glagolitic museum), a Žlahtina white wine cellar tasting in the surrounding valleys, and lunch at one of the cliff-top konobas. Half-day combination with morning swim + afternoon culture is the standard local rhythm.
