Krk vs Pag: two bridged islands, two different ideas of a holiday
Both islands are reached by road bridge. Pag has the moonscape, the cheese, the lamb and Zrće; Krk has the airport, more beds and the green half of the year. Sourced rows and a straight verdict.
Choose Krk for the airport, the green half of the island, the wider bed stock and the year-round calendar. Choose Pag for the warmer sea, the cheese and lamb, the moonscape, and -- if that is the trip -- Zrće.
Choose Pag if
- You want the warmer sea: Pag town's ran a degree and a half warmer than Krk town's in August 2025.
- Food is the reason you travel and you want Paški sir and Pag lamb where they are made, in the landscape that makes them.
- Zrće is the point, or the moonscape is: Pag's bare white karst and salt pans are like nowhere else on the coast, and Novalja's beach clubs are like nowhere else in Croatia.
Choose Krk if
- You are flying: Rijeka Airport is on Krk, and Pag's nearest airports are on the mainland.
- You want green as well as karst -- oak woods, a canyon, a ridge walk -- and seven towns rather than a strip of resorts.
- You might come outside summer, when Krk has a carnival, an olive harvest and an Advent and Pag has the wind.

Krk and Pag are the two big islands of the northern Adriatic you can drive onto, and they are the two people from Zagreb argue about. Krk is green in the north and bare in the south, with an airport, seven towns and a calendar. Pag is bare almost everywhere, a white moonscape with salt pans, the most famous cheese in Croatia, and a beach at Novalja that half of Europe under twenty-five has heard of. This page puts the sourced numbers side by side and says who should choose which.
Getting there
Neither island needs a ferry. Krk's road bridge and Pag's southern bridge both connect to the mainland, and Pag has a second way in by the short ferry from Prizna to Žigljen at the northern end. The difference is the airport: Rijeka Airport is on Krk at Omišalj, while Pag's nearest are Zadar and Rijeka on the mainland. Krk takes the row for anyone flying; for anyone driving it is a tie.
The sea is warmer at Pag
For August 2025 the daily sea-surface maximum at Pag town averaged 25 °C against 23.6 °C at Krk town, read from the same marine archive. A degree and a half. The air was the same, 29.7 °C to 29.6 °C, and so, that year, was the rain: 139.2 mm at Pag town to 142.2 mm at Krk town. Pag's famous bareness is the work of the bura wind and thin soil, not of a drier sky; the row for rain is a tie and the row for sea temperature goes to Pag.
Scale, stays and beds
Krk recorded 5,040,825 overnight stays in 2025 to Pag's 3,218,530, from 940,240 arrivals against 504,386. These are two of the busiest islands in Croatia and both feel it in August. Pag's guests stay a night longer, 6.4 nights per arrival to Krk's 5.4: its campsites and Novalja's apartments are weekly places, while Krk's bridge makes a weekend from the capital an ordinary thing.
On beds Krk leads, 57,711 permanent beds to Pag's 44,415, but the honest note is that Pag is the second-best stocked island in the whole statistics office table after Krk. Neither island runs short, and both have everything from a campsite pitch to a hotel.
Food
Krk's protected products are real and registered at EU level: Krčki pršut, a protected geographical indication, and Krk olive oil, a protected designation of origin, alongside Vrbnik's Žlahtina wine and the hand-rolled šurlice. And still this row goes to Pag, because Paški sir is the single most famous island food in the country and Pag lamb is not far behind. Both come from the bare, salt-blown pasture that makes the island look the way it does; you eat the landscape. Krk's food is very good. Pag's is famous.
Landscape and nightlife
Pag's moonscape is like nowhere else on the coast. Bare white karst, salt pans, the sea on both sides of a narrow spine. Some people find it unforgettable and some find it bleak, so the row is a tie and a matter of taste. Krk has both halves -- the green oak-wooded north around Dobrinj and Malinska, and its own bare karst in the south above Baška and Stara Baška -- plus a canyon walk, a ridge, and seven towns that are actually different from one another.
Zrće beach at Novalja is one of Europe's best-known club beaches and Krk has nothing like it. If that is the trip, Pag decides it. If you are travelling with someone for whom that is the trip, it may decide it the other way.
The year
Krk's calendar runs from the carnival in late January through the regattas, the fairs, the olive harvest and Advent -- twenty-six recurring events across eleven months, on this site month by month. Pag town has its own carnival and a summer festival and is otherwise quiet outside the season, when the bura owns the island. Krk takes the row.
The verdict
Choose Krk for the airport, the green as well as the karst, the widest choice of beds and an island with a February. Choose Pag for the warmer sea, the cheese and the lamb, the moonscape and, if that is the point, Zrće. They are an hour and a half apart by road, and plenty of people do both.
